Mitsumame - Summer Japanese Dessert

Mitsumame みつまめ "honey beans" is a Japanese dessert that appeared in Edo period, more than 100 years ago.

It is made of agar jelly, out of seaweed, cut into small cubes and served with azuki beans and fruit.

Being made of seaweed, it is a low-calory product. Which is much appreciated in Japan.

It is usually packed with some black syrup called kuromitsu, "black honey."

It is kept in the fridge before serving it.

It has translucent texture.

The sweet syrup is poured on top of it just before serving. It is eaten with the spoon.

It is cooling on the hot summer days.
