Rakusai Bamboo Park In Kyoto

I am fond of bamboo. And some wonderful friends conspired to surprise me with a trip to a bamboo forest.

It is difficult to find information on Rakusai Bamboo Park in Kyoto online. Even the official website is "under construction." I wanted to learn more about this place. I have the exact address, though: No.300-1, Kitafukunishi-cho, Ohe, Nishikyo-ku, Kyoto.

It is a charming place for a stroll, with many varieties of bamboo, a museum, a lake with golden fish, a corner with many jizou - the stone statues I have already talked about in a previous post. One can learn a lot about bamboo here. Of course, there is also a souvenir place with objects made of bamboo.

The map at the entrance in the park:

It is written: chikurin 竹林 "bamboo forest" and kouen 公園 "public garden."

A nice message inside the museum:

A presentation of the Kyoto bamboo, Kyo-Meichiku, having a special place in the Japanese culture:

Like a snake shedding skin:

Tender hug:

I learnt that there are about 1,200 species of bamboo in the world. One species can grow up to 1m a day. And bamboo trees expand by rhizome.

Unreal landscape in the bamboo forest:

Madake or long-jointed bamboo, 真竹 shin + take, "true bamboo."

The variety kikku-chiku:

Bamboo fence:

A cute barrier made of kikku-chiku bamboo:

Hollow bamboo:

In Japan, nice things come everywhere at sight. Even on the pavement. The bamboo place is marked accordingly.

Masako-san and Keiko-san, thank you for an unforgettable day among bamboo trees! :-)
