Hassam Western House In Sorakuen, Kobe

Sorakuen is a typical Japanese-style garden in Kobe. Both the park and Hassam's House inside the park, designated "cultural assets of Japan" in the 1960s, were built in the Meiji Era (1868-1912). The construction was started in 1885 by the father of Mr. Kenkichi Kodera, a former mayor of Kobe. The latter was the owner of the park. In 1910, he had a stable built near the western house, in German style - a structure "unmatched anywhere in Japan."

Hassam House was built in 1902. J.K. Hassam was an English trader of Indian origin.
