Todaiji - Temple In Nara

Toudai-ji is a Buddhist temple located in Nara. It has the world's largest statue of Buddha Vairocana made in bronze. Bigger ones are made of other materials. It was built between 728 and 752 AD. The complex also represents the largest wooden structure in the world. Toudai-ji 東大寺 literally means "east big temple." At its entrance, there are 100s of deer roaming among the passers-by, waiting for food. You may view the deer photos in the post of 24 August.

The inscription reads: "In December 1998, Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara including Todaiji Temple were inscribed upon the World Heritage List, under the terms of the UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Inscription on this List confirms the outstanding universal value of cultural or natural sites which deserve protection for the benefit of all humanity."



Some parts are closed until 31 March 2013, like Toudai-ji Hokke-dou Hall, also one museum.
