Another type of dango is hanami dango, in three colours – traditionally made during the sakura-viewing season. Hanami means flower viewing – hana 花 flower and mi 見 to see. The green colour may come from yomogi, Japanese mugwort or matcha, powdered green tea. They are looking so pretty.
A common Japanese proverb says hana yori dango – dango dumplings rather than flowers – the practical side, the tangible or the substance, more important than aesthetics, beauty or decorative items. Even during the hanami season, apart from appreciating the beauty of the flowers, Japanese people enjoy eating under the trees in full bloom.
